Tidy and Keep on Tidying!

In my experience and professional opinion, the KonMari Organizing System is not a one-and-done method. Rather, it is an ongoing process and must be maintained and reevaluated and, in most cases, maintained regularly.

There is so much more to the method than Marie Kondo’s tidying tips and asking yourself if an item sparks joy or not. If you limit yourself to this belief, then you are missing the boat on the real benefits of the KonMari method. The principles can be applied to your life in a broader sense than just getting toys off the floor.

Before starting the decluttering process, it is important to set a vision and a plan for your ideal lifestyle and environment. Don't skip this step, as it will motivate you to keep tidying throughout the process. If you skip this step, you will most likely give up halfway or discard the wrong items.

Be mindful of the things you own. A key principle of this method is, do you like this item? Can you live without it?

Take the methodology seriously and follow the six steps of the KonMari Method.

  1. Commit yourself to tidying up

  2. Imagine your ideal lifestyle

  3. Finish discarding first

  4. Tidy by category, not location

  5. Follow the right order: clothing, books, paper, misc, and sentimental

  6. Ask yourself if it sparks joy

Don't worry if you can't fold everything according to the method. Not every piece of clothing can be folded in the KonMari Method, or maybe your dresser drawers are not sized to accommodate the method. It's ok to create a consistent method that works for your particular space. The most important thing is to be consistent.

Remember to follow a maintenance plan. I suggest regular monthly maintenance to keep your home tidy. Review the category and ask yourself these questions:

Does this bring me joy

Does this fit me

Does this fit in my vision for an ideal lifestyle and environment?

The KonMari Method is worth the effort, but please get it right and commit to it for the long run.
